Plant Operator B - Rumford ME

Position Summary

The Operator B is responsible for daily operations of the power plant through facility rounds, by ensuring the plant is operating efficiently, reliably, and safely within environmental compliance requirements. This person must effectively communicate information to the O&M Manager and the A Operator relative to the condition of the plant equipment and performance.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

•      Provide input to the O&M Manager’s plans and directions and ensure on-going appropriate relationships with other positions.

•        Ensure the delivery of optimal results against appropriate performance metrics. Efficiently operate and maintain the facility with minimal guidance or assistance based upon operation data. Be proficient in utilizing the site data historian, PI Process Book, to assist in plant system troubleshooting and plant performance data gathering.   

•        Start, stop, and monitor equipment including reading meters, gauges or automatic devices to record data such as temperature of equipment, vibration of equipment, hours of operations, pressure and fluid levels to verify operation conditions. Visually inspect and listen to equipment to detect malfunctions or need for repair, adjustment or lubrication

•        Communicate plant issues and keep “A” Operator fully informed of unusual conditions, damaged equipment and current job processes as it relates to the operation.  Proficiently utilize the site computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to communicate and document plant issues and/or unusual conditions. 

•        Perform water chemistry analysis on HRSG and cooling tower systems.  Make adjustments to water chemistry as needed by controlling chemical feed and/or blow down rates. 

•        Operate Demineralized water system in accordance with OEM and plant procedures and monitor demineralized water to ensure quality is within acceptable limits.

•        Complies and adheres to all plant environmental permits, all regulatory (NERC) procedures, and operating procedures.

•        Maintains equipment by tightening fittings, replacing valve packing, gaskets, valves, gauges, etc and cleaning, replacing, oiling and lubricating other component parts and equipment as required.  Assist in Essential Care and Condition Monitoring of plant equipment such as greasing, lubricating, vibration checking etc.  

•        Sets up and operates various tools and instruments to repair parts and equipment.  Operates welding and cutting equipment and completes metal fabrications projects.  Assist in repairing plant equipment and plant instrumentation.  

•        Work shift hours, overtime, irregular hours, and provide vacation coverage as needed to support reliable operation of the facility.  From time to time the working hours will be determined on short notice based on plant requirements.

•        Perform general housekeeping and continuous improvement of the appearance of the facility including painting projects as required.  Maintains the cleanliness of all areas of the plant and control room, or other duties as assigned.

•        Demonstrate a high performance, high discipline, safe, accountable, focused, innovative and achievement-oriented, easy to do business with manner of working.

•        Complete operator training and assist in the training of new operators, as required.

•        Enter events in the plant logs and ensure records are accurate.

•        Complete other tasks as requested by the A Operator and Plant Management.

Education/Experience Required

•Degree from two or four year college or technical school.

•2-4 years related experience/training in power plant operations or equivalent education.

• State of Maine issued Stationary Steam Engineer Boiler Operation License preferred.
• Mechanical, instrumentation and electrical knowledge.
• Maintain First Aid & CPR Certifications.
• Must become proficient in Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
• Proficient in computer technology and use of various computer based tools (Word, Excel, PI, etc.), time keeping, computer based training and others as needs and technology changes over time.
• Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, electric one-lines, logic drawings, technical manuals and P & IDs.
• Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, strong computer skills, and a demonstrated commitment to personal development.
• A valid Driver’s License is required.
• Obtain Certified Forklift Operator credentials.
